Marshmello releases collaboration with Lil Peep as tribute!

Masked EDM producer Marshmello announced the posthumous release of his collaboration track with emo rapper Lil Peep on Twitter on the 10th of January.
Peep, (real name Gustav Åhr), who was well on his way to becoming one of music’s most prolific rising stars, with tracks such as ‘Beamer Boy’ and ‘Awful Things’, died suddenly last November due to a drug overdose, shocking both his fans and people in the industry. The rapper, who was 21, had released his first studio album, Come Over When You’re Sober Part 1, just months before.
While artists and fans worldwide have been paying tribute to Peep since November- DJ/producer NIGHTMRE played clips of Peep sharing his philosophies before one of his sets- the announcement of a posthumous release was met with mixed reactions. While some were ecstatic that they’d have something to remember Peep by, others strongly disapproved, especially since a lot of artists decided against releasing their collaborative tracks with Peep after his death.
In reply to the backlash, Marshmello tweeted that Lil Peep’s mother, Liza Womack, had reached out to him, as
king him to release ‘Spotlight’ so that her son’s work could be made public.

Here’s what the producer had to say about the announcement:
“Peep brought an excitement to music that was unparalleled to anybody I’ve ever met. We started an idea together, that unfortunately we were never able to officially finish together. When I listen to this track now I get chills wishing he could hear it. This record is dedicated to Peep’s mother, family, friends and his fans. Gus will live forever through his music and that is something we should all be extremely thankful for.”
This isn’t the first Peep track to be released posthumously, however. Last month, the rapper’s mother released ‘Save that Shit’ from his completed second studio album ‘Come Over When You’re Sober Part 2’.
‘Spotlight’ was released on Friday, the 13th of January, and has since been making waves and winning people over, and for good reason. Peep shines through in this dark, vibrant track about love and the aftermath of betrayal, with his signature emotional angst and a vibe that makes you want to look for the bright side.
‘Spotlight’ is now streaming on all services globally. You can also listen to it here:
